8th Annual Waterfront Charity Ride will Benefit American Red Cross

The Marinette/Menominee American Red Cross has been chosen as recipient of the proceeds raised from the 8th Annual Waterfront Festival Charity Ride on August 8th, 2009 starting at Applejacks Bar & Grill, 20 W. Hosmer St. Marinette, WI.

There will be a stop in Abrams during the 126-mile ride through Oconto and Marinette Counties. There will also be a stop at Little River Country Club,in Marinette, for silent auction, raffles, food and drink before the final stop at the festival grounds.

Riding or not, you can purchase tickets for the raffle of a 46′ flat screen television. You can pick up tickets from the Cozzy’s Polaris or the Marinette/Menominee Red Cross office at 1812 Hall Ave., Marinette.

Super Donor Days Success

Thanks to the the donors and volunteers at the 23rd annual Super Donor Days event held July 1st and 2nd at Shopko Hall, Green Bay.  With the help of the community the American Red Cross was able to collect 419 pints of blood. This did not meet this year’s goal but was nearly 30 pints more than last year.

A number of businesses helped make the event a success including Bellin Health, Schwan’s, WFRV TV 5, Glass Nickel Pizza, PMI, the Green Bay Packers and Jones Sign Company. There was fun give-aways, free pizza from Glass Nickel Pizza Company and Schwan’s provided free ice cream. People came with the cause in mind. “I think a lot of people help out because there is a need out there,” says Dave Liethen, Donor Recruitment Representative.

The blood drive is very important to make sure we have blood on hand for those who are in accidents, have a heart attack, receive cancer treatments and all others procedures whose lives are saved by receiving blood.

One out of every 10 people admitted to the hospital needs blood and the Red Cross provides nearly half of the nation’s blood supply.

“The need is always there, ” says Liethen. “Please encourage people who have not donated in a long time or it’s their first time, to give the gift of life and make giving blood a regular part of their life,” says Liethen.

Gayle Hein Awarded Kerrie Forster Disaster Services Award

During Hurricane Katrina Gayle Hein realized she wanted to do something to help out. Shortly after that she stopped in to the Red Cross to give a donation and started talking to Jody Weyers, Volunteer and Communications Director. Her significant involvement since then is the reason she was honored with the 2009 Kerrie Forster Disaster Services Award.

She is a member of a member of a Disaster Services on-call team and helps out in the office. She helps to keep things organized and seems to always know what is needed. Gayle has responded to numerous local fires but she also puts her heart and soul into making sure the comforts are there.

“We call Gayle, ‘Group Mom’ because she keeps us on our toes, lets us know when we blow something, anticipates problems, keeps us fed and we all know how much she cares not only for her fellow team members but the people we work with, the disaster clients and military families,” says Judy Gregory, Emergency Services Director.

Of her 4 years of service with the Red Cross, Gayle says she enjoys helping people in need and making a difference in people’s lives. “I learned that it’s a wonderful organization to volunteer for.  The people are friendly and great to work with.”

American Red Cross Responds to Two Home Fires on Saturday

The American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter responded to a house fire on the East Side of Green Bay around 5:30am on Saturday, July 11 affecting two adults and three children.

The home was an upper and lower unit. The upper unit we assisted two adults and two children with monetary assistance for clothing and meals. We also provided the family with comfort kits (which include soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, comb, facial tissue, deodorant, razors, shaving cream and lotion) and homemade quilts. The family is currently staying with relatives.

In the lower unit, we assisted one teenager with monetary assistance for clothing and meals. She is staying with family.

Four American Red Cross workers were on the scene taking care of the families’ immediate emergency needs. We also provided emergency personnel with water, coffee and snacks on the scene. 

The American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter also responded to another house fire in the town of Green Valley in Shawano County on Saturday morning. A Red Cross Volunteer assisted the family of two adults and two children with monetary assistance for clothing and meals, and provided comfort kits and homemade quilts. The family is staying with neighbors.

Red Cross disaster assistance is free and is made possible by community donations. Rick Jerry Awarded 2009 Earl and Viola Nelson Health and Safety Award

After donating blood Rick Jerry picked up a card on the table in the canteen area and was recruited as a Disaster Volunteer who helped out during the Mississippi River Floods of 1993. Since then his volunteer capacities have expanded but he still finds time to donate blood as he is now approaching the 12-gallon mark.

Rick is now a Disaster Action Team Leader, First Aid Instructor, and for four years has been chapter representative to the Brown County Community Corps Council. He has also been a disaster instructor, worked fundraisers and acted as chapter Public Affairs Representative.

Rick has touched the organization in many ways. He is known for his great story telling, his flexibility and his capacity to fill in wherever needed. “He teaches at least two classes a month and has taught over 250 community members the skills vital to save a life.”

“I enjoy teaching the most, but also enjoy the majority of the people I interact with in all of my volunteer capacities,” says Jerry.

The Health & Safety Services Department commended Jerry’s dedication and service with the 2009 Earl and Viola Nelson Health and Safety Award.

Rick’s passion for the Red Cross is evident. He had to rush from the volunteer banquet to meet a new recruit.  “I encourage almost everyone I meet or speak to to become involved in the Red Cross as a volunteer in whatever field they think might suit them.”

Rick says the average “life” of a volunteer is 2-2.5 years. Rick’s 16-years of volunteer service make his story a great story to tell.

Red Cross Benefits from Fire over the Fox Event

The American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter volunteered at the Fire over the Fox, 4^th of July Celebration sponsored by Festival Foods. Festival Foods provided us with a great opportunity to staff their two food tents at this celebration in Downtown Green Bay for a portion of the event proceeds. This is the Lakeland Chapters third year providing volunteers to staff the event and first year staffing two food tents on each side of the Main St. Bridge. Ninety hard working volunteers between the two tents came out to support the event and the American Red Cross. In compensation for our volunteer’s efforts a portion of the proceeds from the food tents will be donated to the American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter.

“I had a lot of fun and met some really nice people,” said Allyson Bickel, volunteer.

“I knew it was going to be a challenge to staff and logistically manage two tents across the bridge from each other,” said Jody Weyers, Volunteer and Communications Director, American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter. “Our volunteers really stepped up and it showed in the success of the event.”

The proceeds raised from the event will go to support Red Cross programs and services in the community. Thank you again to all the volunteers for your time and energy!
