No matter what your occupation or how you spend your time, you can be a lifesaver this summer by donating blood through the American Red Cross at the 24^th Annual Super Donor Days Blood Drive. According to the Red Cross, holiday weekends like the Fourth of July can prove extra challenging for blood collection making this is a great time to donate.

Enjoy a day of great company, special entertainment and Glass Nickel Pizza while being a summer lifesaver for patients in need. The first 50 presenting donors each day will receive a gift, courtesy of Bellin Health.  Free childcare is available during your donation and there is free parking in front of Shopko Hall and on the east side of the Don Huston Center.

“Whether you’re home from school for the summer, or never donated before, come out to Super Donor Days and experience a Green Bay-area tradition,” said Dave Liethen, American Red Cross donor recruitment representative. “We’re hoping over 200 people come out to donate blood during the two-day event.”

Eligible blood donors are encouraged to visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (448-3543) to make an appointment. Scheduling an appointment in advance allows the Red Cross to make donations as convenient as possible for donors.

A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 years old with a signed Red Cross parental/guardian consent form where state permits, must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter Recognizes Outstanding Volunteers and Contributors

The American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter held its Annual Meeting and Volunteer Awards Banquet June 22, 2010 at the Rock Garden in Green Bay. We were pleased to have 182 volunteers and guests attend the event sponsored by the Ameriprise Auto & Home Insurance and Lyndahl Funeral Home.

 The officers elected to the Lakeland Chapter Board of Directors include; Eric Witczak, Nicolet National Bank, Board  Chair; Chris Vanderheyden, Double Digit Sales Growth, LLC, Vice Chair; Cathy Dworak, Green Bay Packers, Secretary, and Mike Gallagher, Schreiber Foods, Treasurer.

Miss Wisconsin enjoys softball, pageants and serving others

Playing softball is not the most common way one would think best to prepare for the Miss Wisconsin Scholarship Pageant, but it worked for Kimberly Sawyer.

“I wanted to leave it all out on the stage just like I always said I’d left everything on the field when I played softball,” Sawyer said Sunday, a day after being crowned Miss Wisconsin 2010 at the scholarship pageant at the Alberta Kimball Auditorium in Oshkosh.

Sawyer, an Egg Harbor native, represents the Green Bay Area and is a 2009 graduate of St. Norbert College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in finance.

As a member of the St. Norbert College softball team and other athletic teams throughout her life, Sawyer said that sports and scholarship pageants have a lot of the same principals including leadership and teamwork.

“I’ve learned so much from sports that have carried over into what I do now and I’m looking forward to sharing that with girls and saying, ‘Hey, you can be a sporty girl and a girly girl at the same time’… I think it’s good to be well-rounded,” she said.

A dedicated volunteer for the Red Cross organization, Sawyer is also looking forward to helping others find their passion for volunteerism across the state.
“I cannot wait to just go out and encourage that and help people find their passion for service like I have with the Red Cross,” Sawyer said.

Another passion for Sawyer is music. In high school, she performed at the statewide solo-ensemble competition and dressed like a renaissance-era queen to sing in the madrigal ensemble.

“So I have a little practice wearing a crown,” she said jokingly.

This passion for music is what initially pushed her into getting involved with the Miss America organization. For her talent, Sawyer sang a classic opera song about a very sad woman.

“I know (opera) is really technical difficult and it usually resonates with the judges really well especially if you can put a lot of emotion into it,” she said. “So I just tried to pick a song that did have a lot of emotion. For me it was a very sad song so for me that was really hard because I’m not usually a very sad person.”

While Sawyer’s background in sports and music prepared her to compete for the Miss Wisconsin title, there was one moment in the competition that threw her for a loop.

Sawyer’s younger sister, Katie, representing the South Central area of the state, was also competing this weekend. As fate would have it, the two were the last remaining contestants on stage at the end of the night.

“When it was down to the two of us once they called miss Kenosha out as the second-runner up, I said, ‘You have to be kidding me, there is no way,’” she said. “I just held her hands and said, ‘Whatever happens, you know I love you and we’re going to go from here and we’re both winners now.’”

Sitting in the audience was Kimberly and Katie’s father, John Sawyer along with their mother, Jackie.

There wasn’t any worry about how his one daughter would take the news of defeat, John Sawyer said. “We’re a pretty close family and everybody roots for each other,” he said.

Once it registered that Kimberly won, her mind immediately went blank.

“I was in total shock,” Sawyer said. “I felt like it was a dream sequence from a movie so I don’t even really remember a whole lot about what happened I’m looking forward to watching the video and reliving the whole experience.”

Over the next year, Kimberly will take all that she’s learned from her preparation and experience at the Miss Wisconsin pageant as she makes appearances across the state.

“I just want to talk to all those wonderful people (across the state) and show them that Miss Wisconsin is a real down-to-earth girl…and likes to help people and help them help others,” she said.

In January, Kimberly will go on to represent the state at the 2011 Miss America Pageant. While making the top 15 would be a dream come true for her, upholding the values of the organization is what truly matters.

“I want to uphold what the Miss America organization is really about because I truly believe in it and I want to do it for my other contestants too because I am a representative of them now and I want to make them proud so that’s more what I’m hopeful for.”

Refugees Find Special Purpose Volunteering with the Red Cross

Each year, on June 20, we honor the thousands of volunteers and organizations that assist refugees worldwide. But rarely do we highlight the selfless contributions of the refugees themselves.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) – the organization mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect and assist refugees worldwide – suggests more than 11 million people will become refugees this year. More than half a million are expected to resettle in the US.

Most will be forced to leave their families behind and rebuild their lives in new communities and unfamiliar cultures.

“During their transition, thousands will choose volunteerism as a way to develop new skills and develop a sense of community,” said Kathleen Salanik, international family tracing manager with the American Red Cross.  “They give back to the same communities that offered them security, friendship and a home upon their arrival to the US. They return hope to families facing similar hardship.”

Many newly resettled refugees donate their time through the Red Cross because of its trusted reputation in their homelands, personal interactions while in overseas refugee camps and family tracing services available in the US. 

“(Refugees) have more trust in us,” said Elmuatz Abdelrahim, a Red Cross volunteer who immigrated from Sudan in May 2001. “In general, the refugee community is mistrustful of the authorities, and someone who speaks the language and looks like them is trusted more. They consider you part of their family.”

Elmuatz saw this firsthand when he was called to a duplex fire on one of Maine’s coldest winter nights. One family was not home during the fire, but arrived shortly after. To his surprise, Elmuatz knew the Sudanese family.

“In their time of devastation, me, someone they know was representing the Red Cross,” he recalled. “My being there was of great comfort to them; I could just see it. The fact that I was representing the Red Cross made them very proud.”

When María Luisa Vigier de Correa first arrived in Miami, after leaving Cuba under refugee status in 1962, she was met with a similar form of support. A group of teenaged volunteers with the American Red Cross served as greeters as families departed the plane. 

“I remember the first thing I got from (the volunteer’s) hands was a box containing toothpaste, toothbrushes, towels, bandages, deodorant, soap … I still keep that box as the most valuable treasure that I would ever receive from the Red Cross,” she said. Today, María Luisa serves as a volunteer for the board of directors with the American Red Cross Puerto Rico chapter.

‘The tense final moments for the title of Miss Wisconsin was truly a family affair with sisters Kimberly and Katie Sawyer narrowed to the last two spots until Kimberly Sawyer was crowned Miss Wisconsin 2010 in Oshkosh Saturday night.

Sawyer, who represents the Green Bay area, was crowned Saturday during the final night of the 2010 Miss Wisconsin Scholarship Pageant at the Alberta Kimball Auditorium. She beat out her sister Katie, Miss South Central, who was the first runner-up.

 Miss Kenosha Laura Kaeppeler, was second runner-up; Miss Wisconsin Central Desiree Geffers, was third runner-up; Miss Seven Rivers Kathryn Williams, was fourth runner-up.

 The Top 11 were Miss Green Bay Area Kimberly Sawyer, Miss Milwaukee Tonya Popowski, Miss Onalaska Brittany Lee, Miss Kenosha Laura Kaeppeler, Miss LaCrosse/Oktoberfest Raeanna Johnson, Miss South Central Katie Sawyer, Miss Arcadia Laura Benson, Miss Holmen Elizabeth Kramer, Miss Oshkosh Shana Pawlowicz, Miss Seven Rivers Kathryn Williams and Miss Wisconsin Central Desiree Geffers.

 Also announced last night was the winner of the Miss Wisconsin Outstanding Teen Pageant, Miss Milwaukee Outstanding Teen Teaka Griesbach. The Outstanding Teen competition took place Wednesday evening.

 Miss Beloit, Jessica Gile, won Friday night’s talent competition and Miss LaCrosse Oktoberfest, Raeanna Johnson, and Miss Seven Rivers, Katie Marie Williams, tied in the second physical fitness preliminary in swimwear competition.

 Thursday, Miss Kenosha, Laura Kaeppeler, and Miss LaCrosee Oktoberfest, Raeanna Johnson tied in talent and Miss Oshkosh, Shana Pawlowicz, and Miss Milwaukee, Tonya Popowski, tied in the physical fitness in swimwear competition.

FOX 11 recognized for Haiti help

APPLETON – The American Red Cross is recognizing local groups for providing help to those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. That includes FOX 11.

Anchors Tom Milbourn and Michelle Melby were at Thursday night’s “Heroes Recognition” ceremony at the Performing Arts Center in Appleton to pick up this award.

It honors FOX 11 and Lawrence University for putting on the ” Concert for Haiti ” special to raise money for relief efforts.

Langlade Elementary School Show How Knowledge is Power!

Langlade Elementary School held its first annual knowledge-athon event called Brain-a-mania.  Students were given a pre-determined number of questions per the respective grade level four weeks prior to the event.  The students were responsible for finding the answers to these curriculum based questions.  On the day of the Brain-a-mania event, parents and community volunteers came to school and, in a one-on-one format, asked the students questions and the students provided the answers.  Families were able to optionally pledge their students.  The students were able to positively impact the pledge amount with the demonstration of their knowledge.  It was a wonderful event to couple the power of knowledge and service.  The event was a success and $1,008 was raised for rescue and rebuild efforts in Haiti by Red Cross.
