Thank you to Local Volunteers

Pat Mertens and her husband, David, donated two new 16 channel, 5 watt portable radios to the Marinette/Menominee American Red Cross Disaster team to use during emergency situations. Pat, a member of the disaster team, realized there was a need for these radios since communication can be a problem in certain parts of the county. Pat (pictured right) presented the radios to the disaster team at the February meeting to Disaster Chair Ron Haduch (middle), and John Meyers, Disaster Team Member (left).

Creating Art for a Good Cause

p12123731The United Way of Door County has a unique fundraising opportunity that not only gets other agencies involved but also raises funds to support community programs. Working with Karin Overbeck, a Sturgeon Bay Artist, United Way funded agencies will be making stepping stones to be auctioned off on at the Fairfield Gallery.

The stepping stone is to communicate an image or feeling about your community organization. On January 30, Mauree Childress, Development Director for the American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter and Jody Weyers, Volunteer and Communications Director, showed their artistic side in creating their mosaic to represent the Red Cross.

“We help families pick up the pieces after a disaster,” said Weyers. “Creating a mosaic to represent the Red Cross was really meaningful, because you are taking all these pieces and putting them together to create a whole, that is what we do for families.”

For more information on this fundraising event and auction contact the United Way of Door County office at 920-746-9645.
