Saturday, March 28, eight local fire departments and Red Cross Volunteers teamed up to help raise money for Red Cross programs and services as Heroes for the American Red Cross Heroes Campaign. In four hours, $2,952.85 was raised by the participating fire stations.
Fire fighters and Red Cross volunteers talked about preparedness and safety, sold raffle tickets for some great prizes and children got to make their own first aid kits. The Village of Howard Fire Department, dressed in their fire fighting uniforms, collected donations in their boots from people in cars on Glendale Avenue.
Ed Janke, Fire Chief of the Village of Howard, said, “The Red Cross and the Fire Service work together to assist our neighbors in need during their time of crisis and help to restore a sense of safety and security when the consequences appear to be overwhelming.”
Pulaski Tri-County Fire Department moved a fire truck to Smurawa’s County Bakery, which also donated proceeds from bakery sales.
“Heroes for the American Red Cross” is a grassroots campaign where local business people, school groups, church groups, civic clubs, and individuals pledge to raise $1000 for their local Red Cross chapter. Although each Chapter sets a fundraising goal, the desire is the same; to support Red Cross services including disaster relief, assistance for fire victims, emergency military communications, first aid and CPR training and disaster preparedness information for our community. All money raised will stay within the Chapters to support our community.
