Congratulations Board Member, Pat Beimborn

On January 29, 2009 Pat Beimborn, owner, Los Banditos Restaurant, and American Red Cross Board Member, was awarded the President’s Award by Olde Main Street at the 2008 State of the Street Report.

 

Pat led the charge in preparing businesses to weather the storm in the midst of major road construction due to the Olde Main Street Streetscape initiative. He is a true leader in the district and leads by example by serving on many committees and boards. Congratulations and we are proud to have you as an American Red Cross Board Member!

GAZA: Unexploded munitions pose a threat to civilians and humanitarian workers as the ICRC helps to repair homes, businesses and vital water supply stations. The ICRC has also restored family links for over 150 families in Gaza who had not been in touch with family members detained in Israeli prisons for at least a month. The British Red Cross has launched an appeal for donations.

PHILIPPINES: Three ICRC staff members were abducted last week in the Philippines.

GAMBIA: The IFRC is working with the Gambia Red Cross Society to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS through song, dance and theater.

ZIMBABWE: As the cholera death toll rises, Red Cross and Red Crescent teams work hard to bring medical aid, clean water and prevention education to citizens.

PAKISTAN: Last October’s earthquake left thousands of citizens without homes to protect them from the harsh winter winds. The IFRC and Pakistan Red Crescent Society aredistributing  stand-alone shelters to families.

INDONESIA: With support from the British Red Cross, one 22-year-old helps rebuild a post-tsunami Indonesia by opening a computer rental shop. See Irvandi tell his story first-hand in this short video.

American Red Cross responds to Home Fire in Sobieski

NOTE: This is the Fifth Fire the Lakeland Chapter has Responded to in six days.

The American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter responded to a house fire that occurred around 1:30am on Wednesday, January 21 in the town of Sobieski, affecting two adults and four children.

Two American Red Cross Disaster Volunteers assisted the family with monetary assistance for immediate clothing needs and food, comfort kits (which include soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, comb, facial tissue, deodorant, razors, shaving cream and lotion) and home-made quilts. At this time the family is staying with relatives.

Red Cross disaster assistance is free and is made possible by community donations. American Red Cross responds to Duplex Fire on East Side of Green Bay

The American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter responded to a duplex fire that occurred around 11:30pm on Monday, January 19 on the East Side of Green Bay, affecting three adults.

Two American Red Cross Disaster Volunteers assisted the one family (consisting of two adults) with lodging, monetary assistance for immediate clothing needs and food, comfort kits (which include soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, comb, facial tissue, deodorant, razors, shaving cream and lotion) and home-made quilts.

The other client affected was given a comfort kit and quilt and is currently staying with friends.

Worldwide Wrap-Up

GAZA: ICRC President, Jakob Kellenberger, is in the middle of his three-day tour of Israel and the occupied territories. Today’s press conference highlighted the humanitarian needs. (See a brief video from the press conference.)

Horn of Africa: (Djibouti, Ehtiopia, Kenya and Somalia) 17 million people are in very real danger of acute food shortage. The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal for support. Here’s one Red Crosser’s field diary of his experience in Ethiopia.

Costa Rica: The Costa Rica Red Cross is providing psychosocial support for survivors of last week’s 6.2 earthquake. The IFRC and American Red Cross stand ready to help if assistance is requested.

Second Fire Red Cross to in 24 hours

The American Red Cross Lakeland Chapter responded to a home fire that occurred around 1:00pm on Saturday, January 17 on the Oneida Reservation, in the Town of Seymour affecting two adults and three children.

Three American Red Cross Disaster Volunteers assisted the family with lodging, monetary assistance for immediate clothing needs and meals. Comfort kits (which includes soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, comb, facial tissue, deodorant, razors, shaving cream and lotion) and home-made quilts were also given to the family.

This is the second fire within 24 hours the Lakeland Chapter has responded to. Friday, January 16, around10:20pm an American Red Cross Disaster Volunteer assisted a family in Pulaski with monetary assistance for immediate clothing needs and meals. The clients are currently staying with family.

Currently, our clients are staying with family.
