Brown County Do 1 Thing encourages individuals, families, and businesses to prepare for emergencies

Do 1 Thing, based out of Lansing, MI, is an award winning and nationally recognized, web-based emergency preparedness program that enables individuals, families, businesses, and communities,  to prepare for emergencies.

In September of 2014, the Brown County Health Department, City of De Pere Health Department, Oneida Community Health Services, and Brown County Emergency Management, partnered together with local businesses and the Green Bay Press-Gazette to promote Do 1 Thing in Brown County.

Each month, Brown County Do 1 Thing features a Public Service Announcement with local organizations whose interests or goals are related to monthly Do 1 Thing topics. In March, Brown County Do 1 Thing partnered with Steve Hansen, Chapter Executive from the American Red Cross of Northeast WI Chapter to promote Emergency Sheltering.

American Red Cross was a natural fit to help Brown County Do 1 Thing promote Emergency Sheltering. The Do 1 Thing goal for March is to know how to respond safely when instructions are given to evacuate or take shelter. Participants are provided with three things they can do to prepare and are asked to do at least one of them.

The three things in March are:

1) Identify the best place in your home to stay safe from storms and practice getting there with your family

2) Learn how to safely shelter in place

3) Make a “Go Bag” for emergency sheltering.

In addition to being better prepared, Wisconsin residents who participate by completing a Do 1 Thing task can enter at greenbaypressgazette.com/do1thing each month for a chance to win great prizes from partnering Brown County organizations. Just click on the “Prepare and Win” story and fill in the short entry form.

Prizes include a monthly drawing for a $50 energy credit/gift certificate from Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) and grand prize drawings including a $250 gift certificate from Festival Foods, a $250 gift certificate from Shopko, a $50 gift certificate from Kwik Trip, and a 7” Samsung WiFi Tablet from Cellcom.

American Red Cross Receives Grant from Cornerstone Foundation of Northeast Wisconsin to Support Services to Armed Forces

The American Red Cross is honored to have received a grant from the Cornerstone Foundation of Northeastern Wisconsin to support Services to Armed Forces.

The Military Relief Grant will support delivery of emergency messages to services members far from home and establish a relief fund.  The activated military person and their direct family can apply for direct aid.

Brown Countyhas community-based military members.  They are without the benefits and support of being on a military base where there are reduced costs or free services for active service military members. When reservists are on active duty they receive military pay that does not replace civilian income.  The reduction of income from civilian pay to military pay can result in financial hardship on military families. 

This grant establishes a relief fund that Brown County community-based military families can apply to for emergency help. This relief fund is for non re-occurring emergency help for families who are on active duty now or have been on active duty within the past 24 months prior to applying. The hardship must be primarily due to deployment or active military service. 

“The financial pressure faced by members of our military and their families just compounds the strain that overseas deployments present,” said Judy Gregory, Emergency Services Director, American Red Cross. “The Military Relief Grant can assist these families in paying for those unexpected expenses.”

The fund can be used for help with utility bills, rent/mortgage payments, security deposits, daycare assistance, food, and/or outstanding medical or dental bills.

Applications will be accepted starting May 1, 2011. All applications received will go to a review committee for final approval and allocation.

Gasoline Prices Impacting Transportation Service

The steady increase in gasoline prices has impacted the lives of many in our community.  This impact is no different on our Transportation service here at the American Red Cross. Our service provides rides to medical appointments, the grocery store or employment for individuals over 60 or with a disability to enable those individuals to maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle.

Typically in a month, we will spend $8,000 on gasoline.  The increased gasoline price has raised that expense 25% to now $10,000 a month.  The Transportation service is primarily funded through state funds that are passed down to the local level and managed through Brown County via the Aging and Disability Resource Center.  This is where the majority of funds are provided to support the service.  Additional funding is provided by the United Way of Brown County, individual donors and a minimal rider fee. 

This overall funding and our investment several years ago in an automated transportation scheduling and routing software and staffing changes has enabled us to manage the increasing cost of gasoline and maintain our fee of $2.00 a ride at this time.

It has been almost 5 years since we last raised our rider fee 50 cents to its current level.  We understand the need to maintain a low cost transportation option for those on fixed incomes.  If gasoline prices continue to rise, we will engage our current funding partners to request additional assistance along with asking for help from our community donors.

We will continue to do everything we can to maintain our service at its current fee level to meet the transportation needs of our clients.
