Girl, 12, helps rescue 6 children from Green Bay house fire

October 3, 2010: Green Bay Press Gazette

Officials are calling a 12-year-old girl a hero after she helped rescue six other children Saturday from a two-story house fire on the city’s east side.

Shaunda Howard noticed a fire in the kitchen back wall about 1:20 p.m. and helped the other children safely out the home at 505 S. Quincy St., said Ed Jarosz, battalion chief for the Green Bay Fire Department.

“She did a great job,” he said.

There were no adults in the home at the time, and neighbors helped Shaunda get the children out safely.

The fire was put out in about 10 minutes, and crews stayed on the scene to put out hot spots, Jarosz said.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but the fire department estimates a loss of $65,000.

The property is owned by Kan Rentals LLC and valued at $66,600, according to county land records.

The Lakeland Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
