Spotlight on Red Cross Partner: Sara Stevens

Brown County Public Safety Communications Center and its dispatchers partnered with fire departments and the Red Cross “invest in the positive” at the Firefighter’s Bucket Brigade for the Red Cross on Thursday, May 27, 2010. Among the many volunteers was Sara Stevens of Green Bay who is a lead telecommunicator.

Sara takes pride in her job and invests in the positive at every opportunity whether it is helping someone who is reporting a stolen bike or providing CPR instructions over the phone. She has even been called upon to calm a woman in labor down so Sara could assist her with how to deliver her baby when she was home alone.

“When you call the police for any agency in Brown County with sometimes the exception of Ashwaubenon or parts of Oneida that you will get a member of Brown County Public Safety.  We are here to answer your non-emergency call, your emergency call and everything in between,” says Sara.

“Most of my contact with the Red Cross is when I am working a Fire Dispatch spot when we will make contact by phone to request Red Cross assistance for resources for families and responders,” says Sara. Important information provided to the Red Cross includes number of people involved and their ages along with the type of resources needed such as food, shelter, and transportation. They also inform the Red Cross if the first responders need resources.

“The dispatchers at the Brown County Public Safety Communications Center relay critical information to the Red Cross,” says Judy Gregory, Emergency Services Director.

Sara and others at the Brown County Public Safety Communications Center know the importance of remaining calm and being there for your neighbor in their time of need and they were there when the Red Cross when they needed help during the important fundraiser.

“Our community needs to make sure that our Local Red Cross has the resources needed for those affected in the event as big as a natural disaster or as small as a single-family house fire.  When I make the call in the early hours of the morning requesting the aid of the Red Cross I want to make sure they have the resources available,” says Sara.

Red Cross disaster relief focuses on enabling individuals and families affected by disaster to independently resume their normal daily activities by meeting their emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, clothing, food, and health and mental health services to address basic human needs.

The Red Cross also feeds emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to hospitals treating disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.

Sara says she has seen the impact of the Red Cross in the community. “An impact of hope.  Hope that tomorrow might actually be a better day.  That shelter, clothing, food and maybe even blood will be there when our community needs it.
